Legacy storage phase-out:

  • Legacy storage has been set to read-only

  • DECEMBER 2024: LEGACY STORAGE WILL BE DESTROYED

Legacy storage older than five years is in its final stages of retirement. It is no longer actively supported and has a high risk of unrecoverable data loss. The phase-out process is:

  • Warning of storage deprecation (24 months, completed)
  • Legacy storage set to read-only (6 months, June-December 2024)
  • Legacy storage destroyed (December 15, 2024)

Resolving issues:

  • Active accounts with home directories on legacy storage have been moved to a central area with a quota of 20 GB. If you were impacted, more information is in a file named WHERE-DID-ALL-MY-FILES-GO.txt in your new home directory. There is a symlink to your old home directory location for easy access to copy your old files. This symlink only works from the head node, so you cannot run computation jobs with data in your legacy home directory.
  • If your group directory was on legacy storage, a file named WHY-IS-MY-STORAGE-AREA-READ-ONLY.txt at the top level has more information. You will receive a "Read-only file system" error message if you try to write to a legacy storage area.

Deprecated modules removed

  • All legacy modules that were prefixed with deprecated have been removed. You can search through available modules with a command like this:
    • module avail -l | grep -i ModNameHere

If you need software installed, please see the Software Installation Policy.

February 2024: new software installation policy

Farm has a new software installation policy and request form: https://hpc.ucdavis.edu/software-installation-policy

September 2023: Globus home directories available

Globus is now available for Farm's home directories. You can search collections for "uc davis farm". The full collection name is "farm.hpc.ucdavis.edu: /home".

Because of the way Globus v5 works, each and every storage area that requires access must be configured separately. For now, we have only
configured home directories. If you require Globus access to a PI sponsored storage area, please email Farm Help Desk <farm-hpc@ucdavis.edu> with a subject of "Farm Globus PI access for YourGroupHere".

April 2023: new home directory structure

In order to streamline operations, all new accounts have a home directory of 20 GB in a central location that does not count against any group quota. Users must store data in their PI's group directory. If your PI has multiple group directories, check with them to see which one you should use.

May 2022: MATLAB available to purchase and use on Farm

Farm does not provide any licenses for Matlab. The Department of Environmental Science & Policy graciously allows Farm users to purchase a license by emailing your UC Davis Login ID and an account number to <support@des.ucdavis.edu>. The cost is approximately $300, and the license expires on June 30th (even if you purchase it on June 29th) and must be renewed every year.

Once you have purchased an individual license, you can load the module: module load matlab

If you have more questions, please email the Farm Help Desk <farm-hpc@ucdavis.edu>.
